Vertical Slice
OBSOLETE: This page is now obsolete, new location at https://alice-flp.docs.cern.ch/Advanced/P2VerticalSlice/
General information
The vertical slice in CR1 is currently made of the following machines located in rack X14:
| Hostname | # Cards | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| alio2-cr1-mvs01 | 1 CRU | Head node + FLP |
| alio2-cr1-mvs02 | 2 CRU | FLP |
| alio2-cr1-mvs03 | 3 CRU | FLP |
| alio2-cr1-mvs04 | 3 C-RORCs | FLP |
The setup runs behind an HTTP proxy. The address is the following (both for HTTP and HTTPS):
10.161.58.101:8080
O2/FLP ONLY: in Foreman (https://alio2-cr1-prov01-mgmt.cern.ch/) all the detectors are defined as search bookmarks (including the vertical slice) in the “Hosts”/”All hosts” page (login using your CERN credentials).
The machines are shared between O2 project: expect shutdowns/reboots at times given in the “System availability” booking system (see below).
The machines are visible from GPN. If you see any issue with network connectivity (BOOTP timeouts, DHCP timeouts, no connection, slow internal connections) contact the flp support team (alice-o2-flp-support@cern.ch).
System availability
To ensure there is no conflicting use of the systems, please check the current status and booking in this shared OneNote document. Do not do anything disruptive without having checked first the availability of the machine(s).
Re-installation of the Vertical Slice
Note on host selection
The examples below assume a re-installation of all nodes defined in the Vertical Slice inventory (1 head node + 4 FLPs)
If you want to target only a subset of nodes, use the following option (make sure the head node is on the list)
--limit alio2-cr1-mvs01,alio2-cr1-mvsXX,...
You can also exclude one or more hosts (notice the single quotes to prevent bash interpolation):
-- limit 'all:!alio2-cr1-mvsXX,!alio2-cr1-mvsXX,...'
Note on HTTP proxy
If using the Vertical Slice inventory, the HTTP proxy settings will be picked up automatically.
As an alternative you can specify it either from the command line
--proxy 10.161.58.101:8080
or via an env variable
declare -x O2_FLP_SETUP_PROXY="10.161.58.101:8080"
1. Select nodes for re-installation in the CR1 Foreman instance
Select the nodes to reinstall and change them into build mode.
2. Install o2-flp-setup
bash <(curl -s https://cernbox.cern.ch/index.php/s/kNMAmYaN9l6RaKD/download)
More detailed documentation here
3. Reboot the nodes for OS re-installation
o2-flp-setup reboot -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
NOTE: the script will wait for the machines to come back up, the best is to CTRL-C
4. Select the FLP Suite version to install
o2-flp-setup checkout flp-suite-v0.12.0
or
o2-flp-setup checkout dev
5. Execute post-installation actions (e.g. create user accounts and configure the IB card)
o2-flp-setup deploy --modules post-installation -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
6. Reboot machines
o2-flp-setup reboot -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
7. Deploy FLP Suite
o2-flp-setup deploy -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
8. Reboot machines
o2-flp-setup reboot -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
9. (Optional) Deploy flp-dev role
o2-flp-setup deploy --modules flp-dev -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
Admin operations
The Ansible inventory for the vertical slice allows to perform administrator operations on all or part of the setup.
It defines the first node as head and all nodes (including the first one) as FLPs.
Prerequisites
1. Install o2-flp-setup (instructions here)
Examples
Check connectivity to all nodes
o2-flp-setup ping -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
Reboot nodes
o2-flp-setup reboot -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
Update all packages on all nodes
o2-flp-setup sysupdate -i ~/.local/share/o2-flp-setup/system-configuration/ansible/inventory-vertical-slice
If you want to do these actions on a subset of nodes, either edit the inventory or use the o2-flp-setup –head and –flps options.
